Topic: FiiO E10 + Shure SRH840

I can't justify the cost of the ADM9Ts at the moment, not least because most of my music listening these days is done at the computer using headphones.

So I decided to upgrade my headphone listening by purchasing a FiiO E10 USB DAC Headphone Amplifier (£61.99 from Amazon) and Shure SRH840 headphones (£109.95 from Simply Electronics).  I have been listening to them for a few days now and have been blown away by the sound quality.  I now feel that I am listening to music as it was recorded and meant to be, as if I am at a live concert.  There's an effortless power and dynamism that I haven't experienced since I stopped listening to vinyl LPs on my Townshend Rock turntable.

A good pair of headphones really does make you question the expense of hifi.  Well, a lot of kit anyway!

Thanks, Nick.  Considering how little they both cost, the difference is incredible.  The FiiO arrived first, and I was surprised that even my Sennheiser MX760 earphones sounded so much better.  But the Shure headphones take things to another level, particularly in terms of bass extension.

Headphones can give very high sound quality for a relatively little money.

The headphone market is in boom times too due to popularity of portable devices.

Those Shure headphones are some of the best that I know of so good to see someone else recognise their excellence! Also strongly recommended are the SE535 IEMs, also from Shure.

Shure record plater cartridges were amongst the best regardless of price. They sounded appreciably better than most of the really expensive ones with silly names.

I remember being shocked the first time I heard a good quality pair of earphones too. My first thought was "Wow. The detail!" My second thought was "Ahhh, so this is what music's supposed to sound like then." It was a liberating moment.

Cheers Andy, hoping to have a e10 soon. My notebook headphone output is rubbish and my Grados arent n easy drive. This was confirmed last week when i plugged in his new Monster beats headphones which had significantly more volume.

Maxwell which Grados do you have? I'm guessing they are higher up the range than my Sr60's as they seem fine from my iPod or laptop.

Hi Nick. Theyre 125s . Dont get me wrong they sounded better than the beats , they just sounded louder. The headphone out isnt good so im looking forward to using a usb dac with a bit of power and see what the Grados can really do.

They need to be driven harder or need more power, I read somewhere that the 60/80 are ok from iPods etc but up the range you need an amp to get the best from them as they are less sensetive.

Thank you for the review Andy. I have been thinking about buying a really good pair of headphones rather than the lower-end options I have at the moment. The Shure SRH 940 got a good review in Sound on Sound so I was already interested in this range. I also like the Shure ear-buds I have, although they do get a bit uncomfortable on long journeys. The only proviso was that the bass end could be considered to be a bit too "tight" but that this is not a bad thing for monitoring and recording. If you want bass-end excitement then possibly you will get that from the DJ models. I will give the 840's some serious consideration.
