Topic: HDD Desert Island Discs - post your favourite music!

There is a very long-running radio programme which UK members of this forum will be aware of called “Desert Island Discs”. Famous people are selected to go on the programme and talk about their lives and music – see http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006qnmr. They choose eight records (tracks) which they would take with them if they were marooned on a desert island. These are usually their favourite eight pieces of music, but not always as music may be chosen for reasons of nostalgia, etc.

I am always interested in the musical taste of people to whom music is important, for example, people on the HDD forum. So how about members choosing their desert island discs and posting them on this thread? I, for one, would love to make some new discoveries.

I imagine it will take some time for people to select their eight recordings so please do take your time – whenever you are ready. Something to muse about when you have a spare moment. Don’t be afraid to be the first (or last) posting. Feel free to post the reasons why you are choosing the music if you like, old flames, happy times, sad times, just great music…whatever.

I hope somebody can find the time to start the ball rolling!

Cheers

Phil

All-Time Greatest Hits

In Dreams: Roy Orbison's Greatest Hits

http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/ciu/e6/ca/8448b340dca0bea645c83010.L._SL500_AA240_.jpg

I grew up to this stuff and it has a special place in my heart. "All-Time Greatest Hits" is original recordings, perfect for the historian or purist, and a 2-disc set that is a great collection of Roy's work. "In Dreams" is another 2-disc set, another incredible selection of songs, but this time all re-recorded and produced by Roy and Mike Utley in the late 80s (the one exception is the track "In Dreams, produced by T-Bone Burnette). The recording is better, the arrangements are better, and Roy's incredible voice wasn't diminished in the slightest.

That's my first Desert Island disc, and here's a treat: It's hard to imagine anything by Roy Orbison being sung by anyone but Roy Orbison. Until you see Mullholand Drive. If this doesn't move you, check your pulse:

To cross-reference over to iTunes EQ, Utley pushed the treble a bit too hard on Roy's vocals, and most of the tracks benefit from a small cut at 2k and 4k.

Tim

ON EDIT: Here's another incredible arrangement/recording of an incredible song. And you've got to notice that even kd lang, perhaps the greatest voice of her generation, knows to step back and give the song to Roy. Hell, I love kd lang. I'd become a lesbian for kd lang. But she did the right thing:

OK. I'm done obsessing now. Somebody else pick one...T

Re: HDD Desert Island Discs - post your favourite music!

Tim,

Excellent start. Actually, you have done it a bit different to how I anticipated but actually what you are doing is better. You have selected an album (well actually two, but we will let you get away with that) and are doing one at a time. Good move, let's do that. We make our selections one at a time and can either select albums or songs up to a cumulative total of 8 selections.

OK, here is my first and I think you, for one, Tim will like it (although it will not be a new discovery). It is the album "Into the Music" by Van Morrison and for Van it is an upbeat album. Side 2 is seamless with the standout track being "And the healing has begun"...."put on your easter bonnet and all the rest" - a wonderful song.

Phil

P.S. Off to Amazon now to check out deals on the RO CDs!

Into The Music is definitely one of my top 5 Van albums. Sometimes it's my favorite, period. Good that you took one, so when my other choices come around I won't have so much to wring my hands over. The two Roy albums wasn't really 2 selections, it's an either-or. And I'll take #2, In Dreams.

Re: HDD Desert Island Discs - post your favourite music!

Hmmm so difficult. Hundreds of albums, let alone songs! Roger Water's Amused To Death (album) is something I always come back.  to. I have many albums that I still listen to after 10 + years but wouldn't say were absolute favourites but I guess the fact i'm still listening to them shows I have a deep love for them.
That long term list includes Rage Against The Machine first album from 1992 is still a classic for me of my youth.
Pearl Jam's 10 album also.
Pink Floyd's The Wall, DSOTM, Meddle etc
Counting Crow's August and Everything After. Infact all of the albums!
Gun's and Rose's Use your Illusion 1+2
Smashing Pumpkin's Melon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
Suede

These albums dont show much into my change over the recent years as I have got heavily into blues rock. So many artists like Joe Bonamassa, Gary Moore and Stevie Ray Vaughan are being played but they haven't reached the cult status for me yet. Maybe in 10 years if i'm still listening. I've got a huge love of all LIVE's albums too.
God what a hard question!

edit: God this selection makes me seem a like a long haired rocker! Quite the opposite, unlike some musics fan i certainly don't reflect the scene I listen to. Short back and sides!

Re: HDD Desert Island Discs - post your favourite music!

I am going to start with -

Jordan - The Comeback

No it's not a CD by some pneumatic tart fresh out of I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here, nor is it a rallying call for one of the smaller Formula One teams...

It's the wonderful, sumptuous fifth album from Prefab Sprout. As the BBC website says:

"Like George Gershwin transported into Brian Wilson’s sandbox, Jordan... is equal parts passionate, philosophical and preposterous. Nothing else sounds like it."

Re: HDD Desert Island Discs - post your favourite music!

It's gathering momentum - excellent. A few points for various folk:

Tim - can you provide an Amazon or similar link to the RO album as there seem to be several with that name

Minty - you are only a Van fan if you like them! Astral Weeks and Moondance are classics.

Dave - not sure if they are your selections or you are just musing? On your recommendation from another thread, I have ordered the Roger Waters

Cornishmanc - good 'un - I'll try it out

A tip although this will not be new to many. If you rip, the cheapest option is often to buy from the new and used section at Amazon - even the most scratched CDs generally rip fine and once they are on the HD who cares?

Roger Waters is a genius in my opinion, Amused to Death is a stunning album opening with Jeff Beck on guitar, my favourite album of his is the Pro's and Con's of hitchhiking. He wrote it at the same time he wrote The Wall but as a body of music it is better. Don't forget Radio KAOS either yet another great album.

Re: HDD Desert Island Discs - post your favourite music!

Anyone else here like Zero 7 ??

I was introduced to them by a mate at work who asked me to digitise a couple of their albums. I never thought I'd like music labelled as "trip-hop" or "downbeat" - but this stuff's really got to me. Great songs, arrangements and production. A lot of their stuff is used on TV - I've heard it in shows as diverse as CSI and Maestro (that celebrity conductor reality show).

Simple Things, the first album is my favourite (if I had to choose), but When It Falls and The Garden are great too. On the strength of these I pre-ordered their latest album Yeah Ghost - the first time I'd done that since A Hard Days Night in 1964! What a let down. Not only is the distinctive voice of Sia Furler missing, but musically it's moved on (and left me behind). But the first three albums are some of my most played (according to Last.FM, at least).

Yes, very much. I have two albums, and it's this kind of music that makes me want a sub.

If you like Zero7, give Peace Orchestra a go..

Bonobo is quite good too

Re: HDD Desert Island Discs - post your favourite music!

Sia has her own album if you are interested.

In the same very general genre I can recommend Cinematic Orchestra, a bit more jazz-tinged and dark but the album Motion is superb.

Nik,

Have ordered both RW albums. Don't currently have any of his solo efforts, but given I think DSOTM is peerless and WYWH is equally peerless I am sure I will enjoy (I always found The Wall a bit patchy).
