Or just buy a second hand integrated amp such as A&R Cambridge A60 or a Nad 3020, both have inputs for a record player sound great and under £100.

The Chromecast Audio has a DAC (output 3.5mm jack to phono using a Left/Right splitter lead) but will also output to a DAC via an optical cable (with the 3.5mm Jack end).

For an amp, surely the best value would be secondhand or end of line stock, if not the above then one of the Yamaha or Marantz models, such as discussed on this board in the last year. If the amp had a DAC and optical input then there is a choice of which DAC to use. Any unused funds can go to a phono amp, if needed, when the record player comes into play.

This is the only Hi-fi forum I have used. I like it. Very much. What I mean is - we all enjoy and appreciate AVI - so it's AVI users opinion that I'm most interested to learn.

Yes, the Marantz 1504 could well be the best bet for him ?

Or a Yamaha WiFi integrated amp ?

I think the suggestion of Richer Sounds is a good idea. I have a pal with the £250 Marantz amp he got from them recently and some Q Acoustics speakers and he loves them, but I also have personal experience of the basic Cambridge amps (they're used in schools a lot) and they're pretty well indestructible and never sound nasty!

As for vinyl. It's a fashion thing for newbies as well as an essential source for us oldies, so telling him it's an inferior source (because Ash says so) isn't really the way to go. Let him feel his way in if he's that way inclined in the future and maybe point him at a Rega Planar 1, which is so much better developed than the cheap Pro-jects and only £250 or so and sounds better than it has any right to - looks the business too...

I got an email from Steve-Z (I must reply) who has just bought a pair of Q Acoustics 2020i which can be purchased from Richer Sounds for the bargain price of £79.

He said he bought them on recommendation from an old forum favourite Phil Bishop.  Phil has paired them with a Marantz PM6006 and has been astonished at the sound quality.

Anyway you can get the amp here: http://www.superfi.co.uk/p-18211-marantz...uEQAvD_BwE

And speakers from: https://www.richersounds.com/q-acoustics...-pair.html

Hope this helps.
