Some American outfit called Apple - announcements today

I think you'll find it was the Sun-Times rather than the Tribune which sacked its staff photographers and issued its reporters with iPhones Ash, and despite that happening three or four years ago it would seem that the jury is still out as to whether it was a good idea. Either way, reportage photography reproduction at small sizes on newsprint paper is some distance away from exhibition quality reproduction at larger sizes on dedicated fine art papers, and the tools required to achieve each end result are rather different at every stage of the process, albeit if you remove the size constraint and have favourable lighting conditions there may be some overlap with the initial image capture.

I am not in any sense decrying the abilities of the iPhone camera, 7 Plus or otherwise, I just find it difficult to accept that it is yet all things to all people.

Now the dust has settled, it seems to me that it might be a good thing that the hardware is not novel or exciting. I feel no need to rush out to buy a new phone, but there is still incremental development and perhaps one day an OLED screen or a better camera will be worth the investment. This does not just apply to Apple.

Of more interest to me are the OS releases later this month. There are some interesting "under-the-hood" developments.

I will buy something to replace our ATV 3 though.
Then you ask why I don't live here, Honey, how come you have to ask me that?

I, for one, now have so much time invested in how all Apple things and systems work that it's very hard to let go. I nearly had a Surface Book at one point but then I thought about how redundant my Windows 10 apps are compared to what you might call real programmes. I also wanted it to be 15". Not sure about the fabric around the keyboard on the new Surface laptops. I tend to use software that works on Windows and OS X which means Adobe Creative Suite, Office and Sibelius music notation software in the main. I had to buy a new MacBook Pro in February and the elevated pricing and need to max out everything with Apple rather than a 3rd party really hurt. Nevertheless, I am extremely comfortable with it as long as I don't think of the price. Apple's range of phones is now larger than ever and I still like the small phone format so the SE is fine for me. I think it's completely naff to be seen walking down the street tethered to your 'fondleslab', so big you can hardly find anywhere to put it. Also not sure about that 'notch' on the iPhone X. iPhone 8 is amazingly expensive when you consider it's actually a 7S. Had Apple not announced the X I don't think the 8 would have cut it. The new options of 64Gb or 256Gb make 256Gb a no-brainer which means that the X is actually almost £1,200. I hear rumours of a new SE down the line.

Apple Retail

The Apple - stores(?) - I know of in the UK are far too small for anything like this. They usually seem busy though.

In Liverpool they have moved into smaller premises which seems odd as the old place was usually full. Perhaps they did not sell enough to cover the rent. The last time I bought something, I used my iPhone. I felt like a shoplifter as I contemplated just walking out with my tiny Lightning DAC. One of the - staff (?) - took pity on me and even gave me an Apple bag to put it in.
