7.1 receiver for 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos
#1
Hi all.

I'm building a shed in the back garden. Half will be tool shed and half cinema room!

So I'm looking at getting a projector + screen and would like to have surround sound using a selection of active speakers.

So the room will be about 3 m long and 2.5 wide and the listening position will be along the back wall, so I'm thinking a 5.1.2 set up will be best.

So I'm wondering is there a good receiver that I can pickup second hand? I'd like 4k and assume so long as it's 7.1 i could use HDMI input and would need 7.1 pre outs from the receiver to active speakers.

So a few questions:

If it's HDMI in would the receiver have to support Atmos or might there be a 'passthrough' option that would allow a player to decode the audio channels?

If the above is true does anyone have any suggestions of a receiver I might pickup on eBay that would work?

If you want Atmos then the receiver would need to support Atmos I think. I don't think there are any players out there that will output Atmos channels over their pre-outs (or pre-decoded to PCM over HDMI). I looked in to this quite a lot last year and unfortunately if you want the latest surround formats and pass through/switching of the latest video specs then you need an up to date AV receiver. I would suggest no older than a 2016 model and check what HDR formats can be passed through according to your needs.

I got a Denon AVR-X3300W which I've got hooked up to 5 DM5s and a BK sub and I'm very happy with it. Tip - get one with audyssey room correction. It really helps, particularly with the integration of the sub.

The 2016 Denons ('300 models) pass through HDR10 and are getting an update for Dolby Vision and HLG at some point.

Thanks DT. When I was writing the post I suspected as much. I might sort out a cheap 5.1 then look at upgrading in a year or so to a s/h Atmos. As I don't really want the outlay on a new(ISH) amp.

You can get some amazing second hand bargains on high quality AV amps if all you want is 5.1 surround. The value of each generation drops off a cliff once a new set of HDMI standards gets released. To utilise up to 7.1 Dolby True HD or DTS HD Master Audio you might only need HDMI v1.2 on the amp (check that though). You'd need a blu-ray player with 2 HDMI outs though so you could send video directly to the display.

Alternatively if you get a player that can decode onboard and has 5.1 analogue outs your choice widens even more as you can look pre-HDMI amps as well.

My friend has a sony sdp-e800 that he could lend me, its been discussed here quite a lot and has 5.1 pass through... so I may look at getting a decent second hand BluRay player with 5.1 outs to keep me going until I could look at an Atmos upgrade.
